Schoeps Colette Series Supercardioid Microphone

I’m not an audio guy, but my Schoeps microphone is one of my favorite pieces of equipment. I have other microphones in my bag, including Sennheiser lavaliers and the Rode Go2 kit (which I also love because it is so small), but my go-to microphone is the Schoeps. Especially for interviews.

The Schoeps is so directional that it can cut out most room noise. It’s not on a frequency so we don’t have to deal with interference and since it hangs from a boom pole, we don’t have to deal with attaching lavalier mics on set. But the real benefit is that the mic just sounds so good. I get deeper, more resonant tones out of the Schoeps than any other microphone I have owned.

It’s a pricy microphone, but well worth it. This article explains the dynamics of supercardioid microphones and provides insight as to why they’re loved so much by audio engineers and directors on set.
